November Athlete Focus:  Pete A

“Pete has been a stalwart member of Torque for over 5 years! It makes me so happy to see him still tackling new things despite injury and ‘getting older,’ he never stops learning and that gives young guys like me hope for the future!”- ”

Tell us about you! Job, hobbies, aspirations, etc 🙂

I am one of the “older dogs” learning new tricks at CrossFit.  I sell contact centers for a living, but my passion is my family.  I have three kids, 20 boy (Jr in college, 18 girl,(FR in college) and a 15 boy who is a Sophomore in HS.  I have a wonderful wife who is the glue to that keeps us together.  In addition, I have two Newfoundland’s that my family says are my favorite kids (sometimes true).  I have always worked out in some way; I am an avid downhill skier and mountain biker.  I am also excellent at breaking or tearing body parts as well as rehabbing said body parts.

What was it about CrossFit Torque that made you want to join?

I was looking for something different, and a friend recommended CrossFit.  I have never done much group exercise before, but when I did I enjoyed it.  I work from home, so being with a group is a nice respite from hanging out with my dogs.

What has kept you coming back to Torque, day after day??

There a number of reasons.  I like the competition, even when I am losing, but I also really like the team spirit that everyone has.  Of course, I love the fitness portion of it as well.  I love being able to hop on skis and be able ski a full day from day 1.  Last but not least, I really enjoy the coaches and the coaching aspect.  I have learned a ton not just about getting stronger, but also the importance of mobility (a work in progress) and other aspects of being fit.

What is your favorite thing about working out at Torque?

I love the facility, but also love the variety in the workouts.  Even on days when I am not feeling it, the mix of movements also gets me charged up.  I also really enjoy my fellow athletes.  I was part of the noon crew for a long time.  As my job requirements changed, the timing needed to change and I have been able to find another crew(s) to work out with.

What is your proudest accomplishment thus far?

While not the hardest movement, the rope climb is my proudest accomplishment.  My first workout after ramp, was a rope climbing workout with Cory and Rachel.  I was somewhat demoralized.  However, one day Coach Ali and Coach Alex took the time with me to work on it “getting small and getting long”.  It made all the difference in the world, and although I am still not a great climber, it was a movement that I was sure I would never master.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Overhead movements (squats and snatches).  My shoulder mobility is still awful, so these present a unique challenge for me.

What is your favorite CF movement to do?

Sled Pushes and Double Unders. I am also a big fan of kettlebell swings, mainly because it is one movement I am actually pretty good at.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who is looking to start CrossFit but hasn’t yet?

Give it a try.  I know a lot of people might be intimidated, when they see the facility and the first time they see some of the WOD’s, but it gets better.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”5″ images=”24822,24823″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
