Congrats Steph on being Torque’s May Member of the Month!
Member Since: February 15th 2025
“Steph C is the smiles, laughter, good friend, and big heart that everyone needs in their world. Blessed to have learned from her caring example as a teacher. I invited her to Torque to see if our gym would be a good fit for her. She then brought a friend to another event over a year ago. I am excited to see her progress as an individual and also helping to grow the community spirit being part of Torque Nation. Keep up the great work and hope we can schedule a workout session together soon!”

Meet Steph! I’ve got a bit of a backstory! When I was younger (early teens… and then again in my mid-teens because apparently once wasn’t enough), I had a pretty major, life-altering surgery. It left me in traction in the hospital for a month, and then in a hospital bed at home for a year. The first surgery didn’t take—my body rejected everything—so two years later, we hit replay and did it all over again.
I had to relearn how to walk and use my leg and hip, which was… not exactly a highlight reel of my teenage years. I was homeschooled during that time (yes, the teacher came to my house—super cool and not at all embarrassing :upside_down_face: ), missed out on typical teen life, lost touch with friends, and gained some weight from being stuck in bed.
Not a pity party—just a big piece of my story. It definitely shaped who I am. It also explains why I can be a little insecure and a bit of a people pleaser (truly an elite combo  ). But I’ve worked hard to rebuild confidence and learn to actually like myself again—and honestly, that’s still a work in progress.
I married my college sweetheart, Erik—who is basically my opposite in every possible way—and we have two boys. Mason (13) is all about sports and the outdoors, and Brady (10) loves sports too, but also anything animal-related. We also have a dog, Charlie, who we were told would be 45–55 pounds… and is now 100 pounds of chaos and energy.
I grew up surrounded by girls (sister + all girl cousins), so raising two wild boys has been… humbling. Also fun fact: Mason is the first boy on my mom’s side in 60 years. No pressure, kid.
What are some of your hobbies or favorite things to do? I LOVE reading and anything crafty. My art is actually sold in a store in Norton (casual flex). Right now, crocheting has a chokehold on me. I also love traveling and watching my kids play sports—sideline life is my happy place.
What was it about CrossFit Torque that made you want to join? I went to a Galentine’s event with my friend Rana. I had always liked working out in theory, but commitment to a gym? Not so much. I drove by Torque all the time and just assumed CrossFit was not my thing.
I was VERY nervous walking in—new people, new place, all my favorite things to avoid. But by the time I left, I knew I wanted to come back. It felt genuinely welcoming—not in a “please give us your money” way, but in a real, supportive way. I was hooked!
What has kept you coming back to Torque day after day? The people, 100%. The members and coaches are incredible. I never feel judged (except MAYBE when Sara is watching me attempt “correct form” :joy: ). Everyone is at different levels, and no one blinks if you need to scale.
I also love being challenged—but not to the point where I spiral (okay, except for that first Open workout… those wall balls nearly ended me).
And honestly, the way I feel after—clear head, less anxiety, happier version of me—that’s what keeps me coming back.
What is your proudest accomplishment so far? Honestly… sticking with it. I have never stayed committed to a gym this long in my life. Also, the fact that I now willingly attempt things like gymnastics skills and Olympic lifts?? Who am I?!
What has been your biggest challenge? FORM. I overthink everything and somehow still manage to do it wrong  I truly believe I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to… until someone gently tells me otherwise.
But it’s actually helped me as a teacher. It’s made me realize my students probably feel the same way—they think they’re doing it right. So now I focus on tweaking one thing at a time instead of overwhelming them.
Do you have a favorite movement? Deadlifts and anything ab-related (give me all the core work!).
What piece of advice would you give to someone who might be hesitant to start CrossFit but hasn’t yet? Just try it. One class is all it takes to realize it’s not what you thought—it’s better. It’s the perfect mix of strength and cardio, and you walk out feeling like a stronger, slightly less chaotic version of yourself.
If you could have a superpower what would it be? Teleportation. No traffic, no commute, just vibes :sparkles:
