More Than a Workout: Why Keith Came Back to CrossFit and Found His Home at Torque

Life has a funny way of getting in the way of the things we know are good for us.

Work gets busy. Kids have activities. You move. Priorities shift. Before you know it, the gym membership you once used all the time has become a distant memory.

That was Keith’s story.

Keith first discovered CrossFit more than ten years ago while living in Minneapolis. Between moving, balancing work, and raising a family, he took a long break from having a gym membership. When he decided it was time to get back into a routine, he wasn’t looking for the most intense workout in town, he was looking for a place where he could stay consistent.

Today, over a year later, his update says it all:

“I’m fitter, healthier, and love this place even more!” It’s more than a workout.

As coaches, that’s exactly what we hope to hear.

“The idea of CrossFit can be daunting…”

Let’s be honest—CrossFit has a reputation.

For someone who’s never walked into an affiliate, it’s easy to imagine workouts that are too hard, people who are too fit, and an atmosphere that’s more intimidating than encouraging.

Keith put it perfectly:

“The ‘idea’ of CrossFit can be daunting…”

But then he follows it with what his experience at Torque has actually been.

“…the reality at Torque is that you are going to get a great warmup that’s tailored to the workout of the day… you are going to be taken through/taught all movements along with scaling options… and you are then going to get personalized instruction before AND during the workout.”

That paragraph pretty much sums up our coaching philosophy at Torque.

Our goal isn’t to throw you into the deep end. It’s to meet you where you are. Whether you’re brand new, coming back after years away, or have been training for decades, every workout can be adjusted to fit your current ability. We teach. We coach. We make sure you understand why you’re doing something, not just what to do.

Progress Doesn’t Have to Be a Competition

Another thing that stood out to Keith was our culture. He shared that he’d been to gyms where everyone lines up at the end of class and announces their score. For some people, that’s motivating. For others, it’s exactly what keeps them from walking through the door.

Keith noticed something different here.

“This is not a competitive gym…”

Instead, the focus is on what really matters:

“…getting a solid hour of strength and cardio, wrapped around a really fun set of members.”

That’s what we’re trying to build every day.

Yes, we celebrate personal records. Yes, we encourage people to challenge themselves. But the person you’re really competing with is yesterday’s version of yourself.

More Than a Great Workout

Keith originally wrote his review after just one month as a member. A year later, he came back to update it. Not because anyone asked him to, but because he genuinely wanted people to know how much he still enjoyed being here.

That’s probably our favorite part of his story.

The excitement of a new gym is one thing. Finding a place you still look forward to showing up to a year later? That’s something special.

Fitness isn’t about finding motivation every single day. It’s about finding a place where showing up becomes part of your life because you enjoy the people, trust the coaches, and know you’re becoming a healthier version of yourself.

Thinking About Giving It a Try?

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to get back into fitness, maybe this is it. Like Keith, you don’t have to be starting from scratch, but you don’t have to be in great shape either. You just have to walk through the door.

We’ll help with the rest.

Or, as Keith put it:

“Stop in, check it out… you will not be disappointed!”
