Being in shape and staying active is far more important for a longer, healthier life, than being skinny or slim.

Don’t take our word for it – that’s the conclusion of a study done between the relationship between aerobic fitness, body mass index and longevity.

Essentially being out of shape doubled or tripled the risk of dying prematurely, whatever someone’s age or body mass index.

On the flip side, if someone was obese but aerobically fit, they were about half as likely to die young as someone whose weight was normal but their aerobic fitness was low.

So does the research show us that people can be healthy and live long at any weight, as long as they are active and fit?

Overall, people with obesity are at heightened risks for serious conditions. But it’s important to note that exercise dropped the risk of premature death by 30% (even if people lost zero weight), which is about double the gains from losing weight by dieting.

At the end of the day, the research is showing that movement and exercise will improve your longevity and life. Get out for a walk, find a gym that offers group classes or personal training, or lay on the ground and get up 25 times every day (thats a burpee!).

Move your body more!
