Strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve overall health, boost athletic performance, and enhance daily functionality. We all know this fact by now, so why aren’t more people making it a priority?

Whether you’re new to lifting or looking to refine your technique, understanding the importance of strength training can help you stay motivated and committed to your fitness goals. Strength training as a key component of a balanced fitness routine.

The Benefits of Strength Training

  1. Increases Muscle Mass & Strength
Strength training helps develop lean muscle, which improves metabolism, supports joint stability, and enhances endurance. Over time, building muscle makes daily tasks easier and helps prevent injuries. We all know that each decade we age we start to lose lean mass. The more we start with, the better off we are. We can’t avoid losing lean mass, but we can slow the process.
  2. Enhances Bone Density
Resistance training is a proven method to improve bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures as we age. Lifting weights or using resistance exercises strengthens bones, making them more resilient. Look up one of the leading causes of aging adults entering assisted living.
  3. Boosts Metabolism & Fat Loss
Unlike traditional cardio workouts, strength training continues to burn calories even after your session ends. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate, which helps with long-term fat loss and weight maintenance. What’s better than that??
  4. Improves Athletic Performance
Strength training enhances power, speed, and agility—key elements for sports and fitness activities. Whether you’re an athlete or a weekend warrior, improving your strength translates to better performance in your chosen activity. Never mind weekend warrior events – what about bringing in all of the groceries at once. Or helping a neighbor move furniture. Or move a toilet bowl to the second floor by yourself, a story shared by a current Torque member.
  5. Supports Mental Health & Confidence
Exercise releases endorphins, which help reduce stress and improve mood. Strength training also fosters a sense of accomplishment as you see progress, boosting self-confidence in and out of the gym. Whether you want to start your day off with fitness to set the precedent for the day, or wrap your day up at Torque at 6pm, strength training will get you there!

Tips for Getting Started

  1. Focus on Proper Form
Avoid injuries by learning correct movement patterns before increasing weight. Our coaches at Torque provide hands-on instruction to ensure safe and effective training.
  2. Start with a Balanced Program
A well-rounded strength program includes compound movements like squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows to target multiple muscle groups.
  3. Progress Gradually
Strength gains take time. Gradually increase weight, reps, and intensity to keep challenging your muscles without overtraining. Follow a program (Torque has one!) so the progression happens in a safe manner.
  4. Prioritize Recovery
Strength training is only effective when paired with proper rest and recovery. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, hydration, and protein intake to maximize results.
