Is Breakfast Really That Important?

Let’s dive into it!

So I would bet that at one point in your life you have heard someone say “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” or “you have to eat breakfast in order to kick start your metabolism.” It probably came from your Mom or Teacher and well, you just didn’t want to hear it.

But, science shows that it actually is quite important to eat breakfast.

Various studies have shown that those who eat breakfast:

  • Tend to have a lower BMI (body mass index)
  • Have better focus throughout the day
  • Meet recommendations for fruit and vegetables
  • Have higher daily fiber intake.

More often than not, those who tend to skip breakfast can find themselves more likely to consume excess calories and more likely to be overweight.

I know personally that there have been times when I didn’t eat regularly or enough during the day and upon arriving home was starving. I realized it was because I didn’t start my day with breakfast. I might add that when I got home I ate anything in sight just to get the brain fog and/or hunger pains to go away.

Body Compensation

When we don’t eat regularly our bodies try to compensate by eating more, later in the day, which is not the goal, especially for those who are focused on weight loss or weight management. So by eating more regularly throughout the day, including breakfast, we can prevent overeating.

It is also a great idea to plan out your meals and snacks in advance so that you know what each meal is going to be.

What’s a good choice?

What are some good breakfast choices? Try to incorporate a mix of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. (FYI these are not all complete meal ideas, just some ideas to get you started.)

  • Greek yogurt is packed with protein. Just be sure to be mindful of the added sugar content!
  • Egg whites – mix them with veggies omelet style!
  • High fiber cereals mixed with berries
  • Whole grain English muffin with peanut butter
