March Athlete Focus: Barney Cohen

March Athlete Focus: BARNET!

“Barnet has made an impact on the success of CrossFit Torque since the day you stepped into our classes. He is always the first to volunteer his help or time when it comes to a Saturday class, Clinic/Seminar, hosting a Competition, staying late or coming early, and YES judging EVERY class during the OPEN!
He genuinely cares about each athlete we have here and wants nothing but success and progress for them. Barnet works on his weaknesses and more importantly never backs down from a challenge…feel free to test this one out. Barnet – thank you for the dedication and loyalty you show for CrossFit Torque and your friendship!” – Owner, Coach Amanda

My job for the past 11 years has been as a Senior Manager for Deloitte Tax LLP.  I serve mainly investment management clients.  I enjoy helping to train the staff, seniors, and managers around the country.  My hobbies other than working out at Torque mostly revolve around things I enjoy doing with others.  I enjoy running road races, participating in mud obstacle course races and have dabbled in two triathlon sprints which wasn’t as much fun in the heat of August the past two years.  I aspire to show my kids that giving back to their communities is very important.  My happy place is at Camp Tevya in Brookline, NH where I spent many summers as a camper, CIT and counselor, where I met my wife Loryn and where I am now the co-chair for their parent and alumni group.

What was it about CrossFit Torque that made you want to join?
I honestly joined CrossFit Torque because my spin teacher was relieved of her duties at my local YMCA and I wanted a new challenge to get ready for a Spartan Race.  I was told by a friend who is a boxing
trainer to stay away since I will get hurt, that made me want to try it out even more. What has kept you coming back to Torque day after day? I come back to Torque day after day since it is a place I can be myself, I am not trying to impress anyone.  I have good days and bad days and hope to accomplish things along the way if possible.
What is your favorite thing about working out at Torque?
My favorite thing about working out at Torque is the people – the coaches and the members.  Thank you to The Chace family for this place we call a gym, a box, and a home.
What is your proudest accomplishment thus far?
My proudest accomplishment thus far would be getting my children involved in the CrossFit kids program and the CrossFit Teens program.  They are both committed to going to classes when they can and love all their coaches.  This is something that to me is far better than making a good lift or mastering a movement.  It shows them how exercise is important to everyday living.
What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge at Torque has been trying to change weaknesses into strengths.  I tried to do this with the 2015 Wall Ball Challenge for 1,000 wall balls in a month.  I still do not enjoy wall balls and I still am out of breath when doing them but I will not quit trying.
What is your favorite CF movement to do?
My favorite CrossFit movement is to wipe off slashes on my whiteboard during a workout.  In all seriousness, it is probably doing a proper overhead squat with good depth or more than 33 double-unders consecutively.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who is looking to start CrossFit but hasn’t yet?
Advice to someone who has been thinking of trying CrossFit would be to imagine a place where as long as you try your best, show up to classes you will be successful in the
eyes of the coaches, members and yourself.
