When Joanne first thought about joining a gym, she hesitated.
Not because she didn’t care about her health — she did.
Not because she didn’t want to feel stronger — she absolutely did.
But after retiring from a sedentary job of 40 years, the idea of starting something new at 66 felt… intimidating.
Like many people, Joanne carried a familiar worry:
“Am I too far behind?”
“Will I be able to keep up?”
“Is CrossFit really for someone like me?”
What made Joanne’s hesitation interesting is that CrossFit Torque wasn’t entirely unfamiliar.
Her husband had already been a member here for four years, training consistently in our ForeverFit program.
Over time, Joanne also watched both of her sisters-in-law train here as well.
She saw the coaching.
She saw the support.
She saw people her age moving, lifting, and showing up — safely and confidently.
And still… taking that step herself felt different.
Knowing something might be a good fit and feeling ready to start are two very different things.
There’s a version of fitness culture that tells people they should already be in shape before they begin.
That they should push harder, move faster, and sweat more to “belong.”
For someone coming from decades behind a desk, that message can feel like a closed door.
Joanne didn’t want to “kill herself” trying to work out.
She wanted to move better.
She wanted guidance.
She wanted to feel confident — not broken down.
Most of all, she wanted to know that her starting point would be respected.
Instead of jumping straight into group classes, Joanne started with semi-private training.
That choice mattered.
It allowed her to:
There was no expectation to keep up with anyone else.
No pressure to lift more than she should.
Just thoughtful coaching and support.
“I learned that I could workout, participate, and not ‘kill myself’ in the process.”
That realization changed everything.
As Joanne got stronger and more comfortable, something shifted.
She wasn’t just moving better — she was looking forward to coming in.
That’s when she transitioned into our ForeverFit classes — the same program her husband had trusted for years, and the same community her sisters-in-law had already experienced.
Here, she found exactly what she needed:
“It is such a collaborative space — starting with the coaches to fellow teammates.”
Joanne’s story matters because it reflects what so many people feel — even when fitness is right in front of them.
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t finding the right gym.
It’s trusting yourself enough to start.
At 66, Joanne didn’t “start CrossFit.”
She started taking care of herself in a way that felt:
Today, she’s moving better.
She’s stronger.
She looks forward to her sessions.
And she’s living proof that it’s never too late to begin — especially when you’re supported every step of the way.
“Many thanks to all the coaches. They are the best.”
If you see yourself in Joanne’s story, here’s what we want you to know:
You don’t need to be fit.
You don’t need to be confident.
You don’t need to do what anyone else is doing.
You just need a place that meets you where you are — and coaches who know how to guide you forward.
Your first step doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be yours.
