What are the benefits of 1 on 1 training?

As we inch closer to 2023, more and more folks are talking about health and wellness.  In fact the term “wellness” is one of the most researched terms on google in 2022.

Top CEOs worldwide are spending their time getting in shape.  Recently pictures of a ripped Jeff Bezos on his yacht have surfaced, as well as videos of Mark Zuckerberg training MMA. Fitness and being in shape is finally trending as it should be in 2023.  So what exactly does this have to do with one on one training and what are the benefits of it?

In order to become the best version of yourself an incredible amount of focus, energy and attention must be paid to putting your best foot forward each day.  In my 15+ years in the industry, the number one thing that holds people back is accountability.  I’m not talking about the already dedicated fitness junkies, I’m talking about the average Joe in his 40’s, who has 3 kids and is trying to lose the 40 pounds he’s gained since college.  He has completely let himself go, and has lost all of his healthy habits. Work life stress has completely consumed him.  In simple terms, this is the most common client I come across in my day to day interactions.

The vast majority of people need personal training for at least the first 3 months of their fitness journey while they build their healthy habits.  Here are a few reasons to consider 1 on 1 training.

1 – Schedule

One major reason to work with a coach 1 on 1 is simply based on schedule.  Let’s face it, some of us are busier than others, and having the flexibility of meeting a professional coach exactly when it’s convenient for you is a huge help, especially in the beginning.  The first major goal we have at Crossfit Torque for all of our clients is getting them physically active 3 days per week.  The most important factor in order to make this happen is time.  Convenience of schedule is a major factor, and if the times to workout don’t fit seamlessly into a schedule during the “habit building” phase, the program will never work.

2 – Personalized Program

Another major reason to consider working with someone 1 on 1 is having a specific program tailored and crafted to the individual. One on one training is great because it will allow for a very specific amount of focus particularly on the goals of the individual.  For example, if I have a client coming in interested in gaining muscle mass and strength, the major focus of our program will be revolved around strength training exercises.  If I have another client coming in for weight loss specifically, weight training will still be a major part of the program, but the exercise selection and mix of aerobic training will make it different then the first client.  In another example, we have a client training specifically for a marathon, a greater emphasis on lower body strength and mobility + core strength and endurance would be the focus.  The attention to the individual is paramount not only in helping the client to achieve their goals, but overcoming the initial hurdle of buying into whether or not the program is for them.

3 – Accountability

Lastly, and most importantly is the accountability factor.  Let’s face it, most of us have the best of intentions when it comes to changing our lifestyle and getting in shape.  The issue for most is not actually staying consistent in the gym, but the other 165 hours outside of the gym.  What are you doing for the remaining 96% of the week?  This is where the 1 on 1 relationship built with your coach will help you to stay on track with your nutrition, sleep, recovery, non exercise movement and more.

One on one coaching is the quickest and most effective way to get from point A to point B.  The beauty of it is that you don’t have to stay in a one on one setting forever.  Especially for those that value the camaraderie of group training.  In fact, one of the best approaches would be a hybrid of group and 1 on 1 so you get the best of both worlds.  This is exactly how I train for jiu jitsu.  The one on one time I have with my coach is invaluable and has helped my game leaps and bounds.  The community feel of the group classes makes me extremely happy and connected.

Our mission at CrossFit Torque is to help you work closer and closer towards your goals.  As you build a consistent routine you will require less 1 on 1 accountability and hence can choose what works best for you and your schedule.  If you’re interested in learning more about our training programs please schedule a discovery call with us here.
