January Member of the Month: Bethany Fantasia!

Member Since: April 17th 2022

“Bethany is a great member of Torque! I’ll never forget when I first met her during one of our Couch to 5k programs … she quietly ran alongside us listening to our “we’re sore from that workout” complaints! She just smiled along and when we invited her to come try a class, she humored us but saying “maybe someday”. A friendship blossomed with member Brittany and the rest is history. Bethany was ready to take on a class, ventured through our on-ramp program and is now a consistent and dedicated member the last 2.75 years! Always asking how my daughter is, Bethany is a truly fantastic human! So happy she has found her strength here at Torque ” -Coach Amanda

Meet Bethany! I was a Division II college volleyball player which I’m reminded of every time Sara tells us to sumo squat. Believe it or not, I used to be able to get very low to the ground and stay there. While over time our bodies change as we age, I value trying to push it to work best for me each day.

Why did I join Torque? Amanda enjoys telling my joining story which started as being part of the Couch to 5K program, listening to Amanda and others complain about how hard a workout was and how sore they are. What ultimately made me join was the feeling of community. I was fairly new to the area and it meant a lot to me to not only exercise for greater strength but to do it in the company of others.

What keeps me coming back?  The coaches who push me to my limits and hold me accountable to invest in myself and the people I have met.

Some of my accomplishments: Being part of last year’s open. It was my 2nd year and I felt much more confident and proud of the challenges I was able to complete.

Some of my challenges: Coming to terms with needing to relearn to squat.

My favorite movement: For strength a deadlift or bench press. I love a workout with a run and tire flips.

Advice for anyone that is hesitant to start CrossFit: The term CrossFit can be intimidating to people. I would say that Torque is one of the least intimidating places while still pushing you out of your comfort zone. I am never afraid to scale a workout. We all do the best we can each day!

What would be my ideal superpower? To fly. It would be a whole new view and save so much time.
