Tell us about you! What’s something that other members may not know about you? Some of your hobbies or favorite things to do.
My name is Chris, and I have been a proud Torque member since 2015. Years ago, my then-boyfriend, now husband of 25 years, traveled from California to Boston on a motorcycle. I recommend it! My hobbies, or my favorite things to do besides burpees, are walks along the beach with my family and having conversations. A good run can change the direction of my day. Reading a fun book can help me escape for periods.
What was it about CrossFit Torque that made you want to join?
What made me want to join was the instruction. I joined after my children started the Teen classes. The Torque instruction in the Teen class impressed me. I have always enjoyed working out, thinking I was efficient with my time and effective in my workouts until I observed my children at Torque. I was neither efficient nor effective. In the past, I would be at the gym for maybe an hour and a half (or more) and manage my workouts. What I have learned from the coaching team from the first day has been life changing. They are concerned about the proper way to move and fitness and their members’ overall health.
What has kept you coming back to Torque day after day? And/or favorite thing about CFT?
The coaching team has kept me coming back to Torque day after day, year after year. Anyone can do CrossFit workouts if they are willing to be coached. The Coaches instruct and guide, demonstrate, encourage, modify, and teach every day, in every class, for every member. My favorite thing about Torque is the coaching. And my second favorite thing is that the workouts are varied. I show up, listen to the Coach, learn, adjust, and do a workout I may not have done for a year. They program the workouts with great detail and awareness of developing their members.
What is your proudest accomplishment thus far?
My proudest accomplishment at Torque is that I have been there for nine years (and it still feels new).
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge for me at the gym is probably overhead squats. I have improved a bit, and the Coaches have helped me develop. But this is a great example that although I am not proficient with overhead movements, the coaches modify the workout slightly so that I can succeed and continue to develop the skills.
Do you have a favorite movement?
My favorite movement is burpees. They are challenging, can be done anywhere, and offer many options to accomplish the movement. One can step out versus jump, for example.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who might be hesitant to start CrossFit but hasn’t yet?
A piece of advice that I would offer someone who might be hesitant to start is that the Coaches are concerned about you. They listen, modify, instruct, and set their members up to progress. Not every workout will be a win, but you will become stronger each time you walk into Torque, physically and mentally. After 13 years, Torque has a record of solid workouts that are effective, varied, and appropriately challenging. You walk through the doors; the coaching staff will support you through the process.
If you could have a super power what would it be?
A superpower that I would love to obtain is to remember all the sweet memories of my children through the years.
